The demand is particularly strong for service industry jobs and health care with American employers looking to fill 6.6 million jobs across all sectors. With the unemployment rate so low nationwide, higher levels of job openings suggests that good companies are having a harder time finding skilled workers. Small businesses are particularly aggressive in hiring, with about half of the open jobs being posted by companies with fewer than 500 employees. In a survey posted by the National Federation of Independent Businesses, small businesses reported that the shortage of qualified workers was a major issue affecting their operations in the second quarter. Moody's Analytics anticipates that because it is an employee's job market, workers can anticipate getting a bump in compensation when they switch jobs.
